Guide through Niš (for beginners)
If you do not already have the chance to be from the south, then at least find yourself a friend southerner. I have visited half the world, but no place in the world has a spirit like that of Niš. You must have heard the phrase “More southern, more sad” but there is nothing sad in Niš. There are no sad people in the streets. People in Niš hug the strongest; they are laughing the most loudly and love honestly as just in few places in the world.
Many cities have a river, but I’ve never seen people cherist friendship and love like on their city’s quay. Meet at least one southerner and in a few days you will already have a couple of new friends. Families in Niš speak openly at the table. They look straight into each other’s eyes and speak most openly about their faults. My friend who studies there met a grandma in the elevator and she asked him if he was the one having loud music all night and if he held a party in his apartment. And when he nodded, she said, “Bravo, I really like when the youth is happy having fun”! These are briefly the grandmas from Niš. So if you have this kind of grandmas in other cities, then lucky you!
If you are a really good friend with someone from Niš, he will take you to eat burek at Micko (or Anton, the people of Niš can’t decide about it, but you won’t miss good burek regardless of who your friend was). You will dream of that burek for days and every burek will be average after that. Whoever tastes a real dish from Niš at least once, from an average family, no pepper will taste hot to him any more.
Who did’t carry a winter jacket with him to the Film Festival in August, it was for sure his first time in Niš and he didn’t know the climate of this place. At the market in Niš, you can buy anything you’ve ever imagined, dreamed or seen, and they’ll throw in a joke for free. Who only picked up the accent, he was just for a short time in Niš. The real fan of Niš begins to think with a Niš’s Be. When you see how people love each other there, you will wonder if someone in your city loves you like that. And even if noone loves you so much, someone will love you in Niš.

However, be carefull, cause nobody who is not from Niš can criticize it. It’s a job for people from Niš. They will talk about the problems of Niš when they are alone. As long as you’re there, they are going to talk about it in the most positive words. About the fact that the water from Niš is the best. About the achievements of people from Niš. About the famous people of their city and glorious history. Such are the local patriots in Niš. If you did’t complain immediately about your city and did not bring out all of its bad sides, good for you. You may have been in the past a person from Niš.
If you accidentally smile at their accent or God forbid, sneer, they will give you to read their stories, in the old-Nis language. It will remind you of the French language that you never mastered, and you will be convinced that you understand it better than the old-Niš language.
The real person from Niš does not know who has entered a reality show but follows jazz. No matter how old he is, some of his jokes cannot be translated. These people are so humorous that they have come up with humor just for themselves. Such are the people from Niš. If you have such a humor that every citizen of your city understands, and nobody ouside the city, congratulations, it must be that you live near Niš.
Niš is the most open city in the world. Somehow, it always cuddles you no matter where you are coming from, whatever you came for, and however much you stay, you will always return to it again. The air there smells a bit differently, it smells like peace. There your heart is somewhat calmer, more in place. If you do not believe me, think that I am subjective, try before you go to North Africa, America and Scandinavia, come to Niš one day. This is a city that doesn’t ask for much, but will give you a lot of good energy, nice acquaintances, beautiful landscapes, sincere love.
And if you are in visit to ortodox people from Niš, a little bit of paprika, hot peppers in a jar, and fresh water you will get for the trip. There are countless miracles in this city, thousands of places to visit and many interesting people to meet. But your friend from Niš will take care of that if you ever get one. And if you are not a jinx, you will get one. If you go there, please bring him a lot of greetings from me. As far as the climate is concerned, it’s always warm there. But that actually has nothing to do with the climate. I’m telling you in vain, you will not understand anything if you haven’t been to Niš!
